Specific and occasionally blunt. A tool that tells everyone they look great is not worth running.
The experience is there; the posting cannot see it
Three years of freelance news photography, filed to deadline for local papers, is most of what this job asks for. What the resume never says is which cameras, how fast, or that any of it was breaking news. The posting names DSLR and mirrorless systems, photo transmission, and enterprise story ideas. None of those words appear, so the relevant experience scores as a gap rather than a match.
Weak verbs are giving away work that was done
"Assisted senior photographers", "helped maintain", "learned photo editing". Each one hands credit to somebody else, and this candidate was in a newsroom working to a photo desk. "Covered", "produced", "edited" and "filed" describe exactly the same work and are the distinction an editor is scanning for.
The numbers are already there, unused
One bullet says 500 photographs, which is a real figure. What it does not say is the deadline they were shot to, and this is a job about deadlines. "Shot and transmitted 500+ published photographs, filing breaking news on deadlines as tight as 15 minutes" uses the same fact to answer the question the posting is actually asking.
